Speed Modification with RAM, Page Filing & Visual Settings

Goes with the article: RAM: Random Access Memory

Many people are noticing that their computers may be running slow due to RAM problems. I'm here to help you get the most out of your RAM. RAM actually stands for Random Access Memory. Maximizing this will allow you to run more programs on your computer without crashing or running extremely slow.
*Note: RAM can be benefited with Page Filing, this blog is about maximizing your page file.

How can I do this?
1) Firstly, go to your Start Menu, then Control Panel. From there, you are searching for an icon labeled System. Now find the tab at the upper right called Advanced. The first box is called Performance, click Settings.
2) Now at the upper tabs, there is one called Advanced, click that. At the bottom of this window, there is a bottom labeled Change. This is where your Page Filing controls are located.
3) You may notice one of two things at this point. You either A) have no Page filing system or B) you do. You may also have more than one drive that has a page filing system.
4) Now, let's work with this filing system to maximize your computer's speed. At the bottom, you should see a recommended setting for your page filling system. You may either enter in this value as the Maximum Size (MB), or choose to go a little lower. Following the recommended settings will add more than enough to your page file. My page file recommends that I put 2,974MB. I know for sure that I do not need that much in my page file, so I set mine to 1,500MB maximum and 750MB minimum. Your page file needs may differ from mine, so I would base it off of the recommendation unless you are more a bit more advanced in your computer skills.
5) Select Custom Size, then work with the recommendation, allowing yourself to run between 10%-30% below the recommendation. Also allow there to be about a 300-1,000MB difference between your initial and maximum sizes.
6) Now select Set then OK, then OK, then again OK and your page file has been set and maximized! I hope that helps!

Another Tip
If you are still noticing low speeds on your system, you may also change some of the visual settings on your computer. There are a few visual effects that you do not notice on your computer that is taking up space that could be used by your programs.
1) Stay in the same area as the Page Filing System if you are still there!! If not, see Step One under "How can I do this?".
2) Under Visual Effects, select custom.
3) If you still want your computer to look nice, but have the minor effects off, then uncheck everything except
use visual styles on windows and buttons. Select Apply and see if you like the way it looks. If not, you may check and uncheck whatever boxes you wish, but only select Apply until you are sure that is the style you want.
*Note: You may change the selections later, its not completely permanent.
4) Select Apply, OK, OK, and there you go. Your computer should still appear nice but allow you to open windows faster amongst others.

If all Else Fails
Then you are in need of a new RAM stick. That gets into quite a bit of detail which I will have to put in a later blog. For now, you may search the internet for other options or ways to get this RAM. RAM will cost you quite a bit of pocket change.

I hope that helps with your slow computers! See you next time.
